Statement on 12/8/21 Sheriff Incident

My office has received numerous communications related to an incident on December 8, 2021, which involved the Sheriff and Hennepin County property.

It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle or to carry a firearm with a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, and it is inexcusable to do so while acting in an official capacity or while using County property. Elected officials should act and be held to a high professional standard. The information presented in media reports and the Sheriff’s statement indicate actions far outside of this professional standard.

I understand that the Sheriff has been discharged from the hospital, and that he has entered outpatient treatment to receive the support he needs to improve his wellness. The need for mental health support and addiction services has grown substantially over the years. This need is exacerbated by compounding crises experienced by our communities, and it must be met with compassion and care.

As such, I strongly believe that the Sheriff's recovery should be the sole focus of his time and that he should take administrative leave until his criminal charges have been resolved.

There are many questions still unanswered from constituents who are seeking transparency and an understanding of next steps. I encourage the Sheriff's office to consistently provide public statements so our shared residents are properly informed.

Specific responses from my office will be limited due to the ongoing criminal investigation; however I welcome continued communication from you so I may incorporate your perspectives in my actions.
